With Summer just around the corner, Spain has once again been crowned as the nation with the world’s best beaches.
Blue Flag beaches are said to be the ‘gold standard’ of beaches and Spain has 579 of them, the world’s highest. To acquire the prestigious Blue Flag status, it needs to perform exceptionally in a number of categories that have to do with safety, amenities, cleanliness and environmental standards.
Handed out by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), The Blue Flag is a symbol of the environmental quality of beaches and is awarded on the basis of four criteria: environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management and safety and services.
Spain has topped the ranking for the world’s best beaches ever since the competition was first held by the FEE back in 1987. That’s 30 consecutive years of worldwide success.
Interestingly enough, the Mediterranean nation was actually awarded seven fewer flags than last year but this had no effect in the outcome as Spain comfortably topped the ranking for the 30th consecutive year.
Out of Spain’s 579 Blue Flag beaches, Valencia boasts the highest number with 129 whereas the north-western most region of Galicia comes in second with (113). Catalonia and Andalusia were third and fourth with 95 and 90 first class beaches respectively.
Spain’s beaches leave you spoilt for choice but deVere Spain are here to help you narrow down your search.
The Costa del Sol in Andalusia is always a popular hit with tourists worldwide and popular beaches include the Playa del Cristo. a small bay with crystal-clear azure water, the beach is perfect for families with car park lying not far from the beach.
For a more party atmosphere, head over to Torremolinos’ beach, Costa del Sol’s first ever resort. The town surrounding the beach is popular with British and has many British styles pubs and bars and a busy nightlife.
However, if you are looking for something a bit more off the beaten track, then Bolonia on the Costa de la Luz is the one for you. More secluded than the rest and not as easy to get there but well worth the trek. Its long stretch of beaches boast a wide sweep of golden sand.
World-class beaches in the autonomous region of Valencia include Playa de Voramar in Benicàssim. With its top-quality water and excellent amenities and its proximity to the city of Castellón the Playa de Gurugú is perfect for tourists.
Spain’s unemployment at its lowest in 10 years
Spain’s unemployment rate has fallen in the fourth quarter, dropping to its lowest level in ten years as an increase in agriculture and construction jobs counteracted the tourist industry’s off-season, according to official statistics released Tuesday.
